Reports to: Managing Director

We are looking for an engaged and inquisitive mind to join our strategy team in a hybrid Challenge Strategist and Strategic Planner role. The Challenge Strategic Planner will play a significant leadership role in the activities required to identify, shape, design, and develop open innovation challenges and competitions. You will need to be comfortable interfacing directly with clients from the public and private sectors and subject matter experts across a variety of fields.  Your exceptional leadership and organizational skills will allow you to succeed in interacting with government clients, corporate sponsors and donors, and subject matter experts.  You will be expected to simultaneously lead several competition projects, assist on others to ensure their successful and timely completion, and lead business development efforts.

The Challenge Strategic Planner plays a significant role in identifying, researching, designing, and developing competitions across all topic areas, with challenge strategy responsibilities including:

  • Lead planning of the challenge strategy and design process
  • Write detailed challenge design documents based on primary and secondary research, interviews with subject-matter experts, and collaboration with internal and client stakeholders
  • Conduct project postmortems and create recommendations for future projects
  • Develop thought leadership and be a leader in the challenges, prizes and competitions industry
  • Participate in challenges, prizes, and competitions and related industry events
  • Assist in challenge new business efforts, including writing RFP responses, participating in client proposals and presentations

This role will also provide day-to-day account planning, brand strategy, and research leadership for multiple accounts across a range of industries.  This position is as unique as our agency - we need a rare blend of thinker and doer, a self-starter with strong chops in branding and advertising as well as experience in the digital and cross-cultural realms.  The ideal candidate should be passionate about media and technology, curious about what makes consumers tick, proactive in work outlook, and a curator of culture. We are looking for someone who is willing to get “their hands dirty” and conduct both formal and informal research when necessary. You will provide deep consumer understanding and insight to inform the development of integrated marketing and communications solutions at every stage, working across the diverse cultural spectrum of today’s America. They will manage the research and strategy development for all deliverables – creative, media and technology.

  • Work closely and proactively with account management colleagues to provide strategic direction
  • Collaborate with our creative team to identify powerful, cross-cultural insights that will form the foundation for impactful creative
  • Develop and conduct creative briefings that provide clear persuasive information
  • Represent the client’s customers in client meetings and present research and strategy findings
  • Develop accurate and insightful conclusions from research data and present strategy and direction to the client
  • Support new business activities
  • Lead and collaborate with clients on research projects from start to finish
  • Recommend and implement research that will aid in consumer insights 
  • Monitor and interpret cultural and social trends relevant to our client’s business
  • Provide clear specifications for actionable relevant research to the team and client
  • Generate and present agency’s strategic POVs
  • Manage and disseminate primary and secondary research knowledge across all agency teams
  • Work on innovative original research projects for the agency and support the agency’s thought leadership practice

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 5 or more years of work experience in an advertising or digital agency with at least 3 of those years in research or digital strategy
  • Experience working with open innovation challenge programs or crowd sourcing preferred
  • General Market AND multicultural (Hispanic, African-American, Asian, etc.) experience preferred
  • Experience leading primary research, including quantitative (e.g. surveys) and qualitative (focus groups, ethnographies, etc.) research
  • Experience synthesizing data and drawing meaningful insights that result in actionable strategies
  • Digital experience highly prioritized
  • MUST be able to roll up your sleeves and dig deep – this is a very hands-on position
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Passionate about emerging, innovative, technologies
  • Experience using syndicated research tools
  • Must be passionate about emerging digital strategy disciplines, such as content strategy, user experience, and native advertising

Qualifications:

  • Ability to write compelling, articulate and succinct challenge, creative brief and media briefs
  • Ability to read and interpret information from a variety of sources, such as trade journals, research reports, white papers and cross-tabulated survey data
  • Ability to write research reports, presentations, white papers and general business correspondence
  • Proven ability to effectively present to clients and internal audiences
  • Ability to “drink from the fire hose” – can stay on top of emerging digital, multicultural, and advertising industry trends
